November 2025 | 41 The company’s flagship product is the Swat- ter Portable Gun (SPG): a portable system de- signed to neutralise unmanned aerial systems by jamming their communication and geoloca- tion signals of unauthorised drones. It operates by emitting controlled radiofrequency energy to disrupt the communication channels be- tween drones and their operators, as well as blocking geolocation signals from global navi- gation satellites. If communications are disrupted, the opera- tor loses direct control of the drone, which, if equipped with optical sensors, also ceases to transmit images or data. In autonomous opera- tion scenarios, where the drone follows pre- programmed GNSS routes, signal inhibition can prevent the drone from completing its mission and force it into fail-safe mode, causing it to crash or perform a controlled landing. The SPG stands out from other anti-drone, or C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems), solutions due to its advanced technical capa- bilities and operational versatility. “The system can simultaneously jam ten radiofrequency bands, acting across the command and naviga- tion protocols used by commercial and tactical drones”, Branco explains. "Weighing under six kilos, it offers a power-to-weight ratio superior to that of its competitors, ensuring high mobil- ity and ease of use in field conditions". The SPG has an autonomy of around 30 min- utes in continuous transmission mode and 24 hours in standby mode. It also features a set of modular, quick-swap antennas that allow users to adapt the configuration to their operational needs, either to increase range or to ensure more extensive coverage. Furthermore, the SPG can operate in multiple portable, fixed or vehicle-mounted configurations. This flexibility enables a patrol team, for example, to use the system in portable mode and connect it to a vehicle if necessary, ensuring 360-degree pro- tection while on the move. This capability was validated in exercises conducted with the Por- tuguese Army in Santa Margarida, where the SPG demonstrated its effectiveness in both portable and vehicle-mounted modes. Since its establishment in 2021, Swatter has worked closely with the Portuguese Armed Forces to validate its solutions. During the REPMUS exercise organised by the Portu- guese Navy in 2025, the company received the “Navy Tested” qualification. Its goal for 2026 is to achieve “Navy Mission Proven” status. “Vali- dation by the Navy has had a significant impact on Swatter”, says Branco. “It has strengthened the credibility of the system in naval and ad- verse contexts, provided critical operational data for product improvement, and reinforced our integration in NATO exercises”. The company currently operates solely in Eu- ropean markets, but plans to expand its reach while continuing to invest in research and development. “We maintain an ongoing col- laboration with ISCTE, the institution where our work in this field first began”, Branco re- calls. “This partnership enables R&D projects in the C-UAS domain, including several mas- ter's dissertations — some already completed and others ongoing”. One of Swatter’s goals is to establish cooperation protocols with other Portuguese and international universities that specialise in drone neutralisation systems. When asked about the most promising techno- logical trends in the defence and security sec- tors, Branco highlights artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning algorithms as key to improving the detection, classification, and neutralisation of threats in real time. “Simulta- neously, multi-domain integration — combin- ing naval, aerial, land and cyber capabilities — is essential to developing synergistic solutions that can operate in a coordinated way within complex and dynamic environments”.
